NE1fm 102.5 launched in June 2007 as Newcastle and Gateshead's first full-time community radio station

NE1fm 102.5 is a radio station broadcasting 24 hours a day to the people of Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead, live on 102.5 FM in the area and online via this website.

There’s something for everyone on NE1fm. We’ve broadcast everything from paranormal investigations to pro wrestling interviews, and musical styles ranging from Northern soul and alternative rock to jazz and dubstep. You can find our full current schedule here.

We’ve been at countless live events ranging from the large, such as Evolution Festival, to smaller occasions in local bars, parks and youth centres. We frequently broadcast live from community locations with local organisations, offering them a voice live on the radio.

Live music and interviews are a big part of NE1fm, and we’ve given airtime to countless local bands that would otherwise have little opportunity to have their music played on the radio. Figures ranging from Fabricio Coloccini and Olly Murs to Angelos Epithemiou and Gil Scott-Heron have appeared on NE1fm, and shortly after our launch we featured local features Maxïmo Park.

NE1fm is run entirely by volunteers, from our on-air personnel to everybody behind the scenes. We’re a community radio station, produced by the community around Newcastle and Gateshead. See our Volunteering page for more information.

We launched on June 8th, 2007, broadcasting live from Leazes Park at the Green Festival. The name NE1fm is a play on the postcode NE1, which covers Newcastle upon Tyne, and the fact that ‘anyone’ can become part of the station.

Our parent organisation is Community Broadcast Initiative Tyneside, which has experience of running radio projects for over fifteen years.
