No Excuse is a community-focused, monthly radio programme that highlights issues of concern to people across Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead, broadcast on the last Friday of every month at 2PM.
Each edition of No Excuse typically lasts just over an hour, with occasional extension to two hours as needed, and focuses on an issue that affects large numbers of people, such as racism, domestic abuse, financial problems, teenage runaways or alcohol abuse.
Programmes in the pipeline will cover issues including eating disorders, unemployment, young offenders and ex-service personnel.
Individuals who have experienced or are currently experiencing the issue under discussion share their stories through interviews, and a panel of studio guests and representatives from local organisations share advice and information on how to solve the problems.
No Excuse’s overall message is that there is help available for people who need support, and that it is often simply a matter of knowing where to go and taking the all important decision to ask for help.
The programme works in conjunction with a number of local organisations, including Victim Support, Women’s Aid, and both Newcastle and Gateshead Council. There are also regular contributions from Headliners, a training programme for young journalists.
In 2012 No Excuse linked up with Crisis Skylight to stage a series of public events. The first was held in February, and the success of that evening has resulted in plans for similar events in May and September.
The first public event, No Excuse for Homelessness, provided a platform for members of the public to question a specialist panel on issues surrounding homelessness locally.
The panel for the first event was made up of specialists on homelessness and housing from Newcastle and Gateshead Council and from voluntary organisations working in the sector.
Details on each broadcast, including contact information for the organisations featured, and podcasts of all the shows to date, can be found at the No Excuse blog.
The No Excuse team consists of Amina Marix Evans and Elaine Parker, with Phoenix Dark-Knight and Diane Stewart of The Cyrenians joining the team for the public panel events.[/two_third] [one_third last=”yes”]
